What is
Counselling and Psychotherapy?
Let's unpack these approaches
Counselling & Psychotherapy
What is counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling
-
short-term
-
focused interventions for immediate or recent concerns
-
helps you identify skills and coping mechanisms to navigate current challenges
-
goals are often specific i.e. exam stress, grief, relationship issues
Psychotherapy
-
long-term
-
focused interventions on deep routed patterns, trauma and chronic conditions that have developed over time
-
sessions may explore past experiences and underlying patterns to better understand the 'why' behind the 'what'
-
it aims to foster insight, self-awareness and long-lasting change
-
examples of this may be someone with a history of childhood trauma, chronic depression or anxiety, or if you're seeking to deeply understand and change long-standing unhealthy patterns
Both counselling and psychotherapy are built upon a foundation of profound respect for the individual client, honouring their values, beliefs and right to make their own choices. I understand that each client's journey is unique. My approach is flexible to best meet your individual needs. For instance, initial counseling for a specific problem may evolve into deeper psychotherapeutic work if underlying patterns emerge. Conversely, even in long-term psychotherapy, practical counseling strategies may be needed for immediate challenges.
